60, 80 or 100 ton: which weighbridge?
How to choose between a 60, 80 and 100 ton weighbridge: real loads, deck length, accuracy, load cells and which sites need each.
Short answer: a 60 ton weighbridge with a 16 m deck suits most factories, public kantas and mandis that weigh trucks up to multi-axle size. Choose 80 ton when long multi-axle trucks and trailers arrive fully loaded every day. Choose 100 ton for quarries, mines, steel, cement and heavy-cargo yards where trailers and heavy tippers run at the top of their load. Size the deck length first, then the capacity.
The three are the most-asked sizes in India, and the difference between them is not only the number on the indicator. Capacity changes the load cells, the deck steel, the foundation and the smallest weight the bridge can show. This guide explains how to pick the right one. For the full method (vehicle table, headroom and width) see how to choose capacity and size.
Size for what really arrives at the gate
A weighbridge has to weigh what actually arrives at the gate, and that is the reason buyers look at 80 and 100 ton. A fully loaded trailer, a heavy tipper on a mine road or an over-dimensional cargo trailer can be far heavier than an ordinary truck. If loaded trailers arrive every day, our 1.2 × headroom rule usually points to an 80 ton weighbridge. A weighbridge must never be the weak point when such a vehicle drives on.
60 vs 80 vs 100 ton at a glance
| 60 ton | 80 ton | 100 ton | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical deck | 12 – 16 m | 16 – 18 m | 16 – 18 m |
| Heaviest vehicle it suits | Rigid trucks, tankers and most multi-axle trucks | Loaded trailers and multi-axle trucks with headroom | Heavy tippers, trailers and heavy cargo at full load |
| Typical sites | Factories, public kantas, mandis, warehouses | Logistics yards, ports, steel and scrap traders | Quarries, mines, cement, steel plants, heavy-cargo yards |
| Usual display step (e) | 10 or 20 kg | 20 kg | 20 kg |
| Deck and load cells | Standard section and cells | Heavier section, higher-rated cells | Heaviest section, highest-rated cells |
The display step and the number of load cells are fixed at the design stage, and the verified step is shown on the stamping certificate; the table shows usual values only.
Deck length matters more than capacity
All axles of the longest loaded vehicle must stand on the deck at the same time. A 100 ton bridge with a 12 m deck cannot weigh an 18 m trailer in one go, while a 60 ton bridge with an 18 m deck can. So first decide the length from your longest vehicle, then the capacity from your heaviest one. Our standard decks run from 7 to 18 m; 24 m and longer are built for export road trains.
Is a bigger capacity always safer?
Not always. Headroom protects the load cells from shock when trucks brake on the deck, and we size capacity at about 1.2 × the heaviest real gross weight. Going far beyond that has a cost:
- Coarser display stepWithin the OIML R76 Class III limits, a larger capacity is usually built with a larger step. A 60 ton bridge often reads in 10 kg steps; 80 and 100 ton bridges usually read in 20 kg steps.
- Higher minimum weightClass III sets the minimum load at 20 steps: about 200 kg on a 10 kg step and about 400 kg on a 20 kg step. If you also weigh small loads such as part-loads or empty vehicles, a 60 ton bridge reads them more finely.
- More steel and civil workA heavier deck, higher-rated load cells and a stronger foundation. See foundation and civil works and what decides weighbridge price.
- Stamping and re-verificationEvery bridge used for trade is verified and stamped by Legal Metrology and re-verified every 12 months, whatever its capacity. See stamping and annual verification.
The weighing error you may accept also matters. Use the error-cost calculator to see what a few kilograms per weighment mean in money over a year.
Which capacity for which site
| Site | Usual choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Public dharam kanta near a highway or mandi | 60 – 80 ton, 16 – 18 m | Takes rigid trucks and most loaded trailers; choose 80 ton if heavy trailers are a large share of your traffic. See starting a dharam kanta. |
| Factory receiving raw material by truck | 60 ton, 16 m | Covers rigid multi-axle trucks and tankers with headroom. |
| Mandi or agri trader | 40 – 60 ton, 12 – 16 m | Tractor-trolleys and trucks; a smaller step suits light loads. |
| Steel, scrap, ports and logistics yards | 80 ton, 16 – 18 m | Long trailers loaded close to their limit, day after day. |
| Quarry, mine, crusher or cement plant | 80 – 100 ton, 16 – 18 m | Heavy tippers and dumpers, shock loads and dust; an RCC deck or a heavy steel deck. |
| Heavy-cargo or project site | 100 ton or more, built to order | Over-dimensional loads. Symphony has delivered 120 MT. |
Pit-less, pit, RCC or modular in each capacity
All three capacities are built as pit-less, pit-type and concrete (RCC) weighbridges. A modular weighbridge needs no foundation and installs within hours on a hard, level surface, which suits contractors and temporary sites. See pit vs pit-less for the civil-work difference.
Five questions before you decide
- What is the heaviest loaded vehicle you receive?Use the weight on its slips, not the registration certificate.
- How long is your longest vehicle? This sets the deck length.
- Will heavier vehicles come in the next ten years?A new customer, mine lease or plant expansion can change the traffic.
- Do you also weigh light loads? If so, a smaller capacity with a finer step may serve you better.
- Is the bridge for trade? Then it needs stamping before first use and re-verification every 12 months.
Send us the answers with a site photo and we recommend the capacity and length in writing. Symphony dispatches in about 2 weeks from a commercially cleared order with PO. Every weighbridge carries a 1-year warranty, plus a 25-year structural warranty on RCC concrete (T&C apply). We serve buyers in Ahmedabad, across Gujarat and all over India.
