Analog or digital load cells?
Analog vs digital weighbridge load cells: how they work, accuracy, diagnostics, surge protection, cost and which to choose.
Analog load cells send a small mV/V signal combined in a junction box and are economical. Digital load cells send each cell’s reading digitally, so faults can be pinpointed and long cables are less of a problem. Choose digital for high-traffic, unmanned or lightning-prone sites; analog suits simpler, budget sites.
Every weighbridge stands on load cells. They come in two families, and the choice affects diagnostics, cabling and cost more than accuracy.
| Analog | Digital | |
|---|---|---|
| Signal | Small mV/V signal combined in a junction box | Each cell sends a digital reading |
| Diagnostics | Corner adjustment with trim pots | Indicator sees each cell; faults pinpointed |
| Cabling | Sensitive to long cables and noise | Robust over long cables |
| Surge protection | Arrestors in the junction box | Built-in protection plus arrestors |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
| Best for | Budget installations, simple sites | High-traffic, unmanned and critical sites |
Our advice
Choose digital where downtime is expensive, cable runs are long or lightning is common. Analog remains a sound, economical choice for many sites. Either way, fit a CVT and good earthing.
