Steel or concrete (RCC) weighbridge?

Steel vs concrete (RCC) weighbridges compared: corrosion, maintenance, installation, relocation, warranty and which sites suit each.

Quick answer

Choose a concrete (RCC) weighbridge for coastal, saline, chemical or permanent sites: it does not rust, needs no repainting and Symphony gives it a 25-year structural warranty. Choose steel when you want it working quickly or may move it. Both weigh to the same Class III accuracy.

The weighbridge is the part trucks drive on. Both steel and reinforced-concrete (RCC) weighbridges sit on the same type of load cells and weigh to the same Class III accuracy. The choice is about the site, the life you expect and how much upkeep you want.

Choose concrete (RCC) when

  • The air or the load is corrosiveSalt works, ports, fertiliser and chemical plants corrode painted steel.
  • The weighbridge will stay putA concrete weighbridge is built for a permanent location.
  • You want low upkeepNo repainting, and a 25-year structural warranty on the concrete.

Choose steel when

  • You want it working quicklyThere is no concrete weighbridge to cure on site.
  • You may moveA steel weighbridge can be lifted and re-installed; for frequent moves choose the modular weighbridge.

Semi-concrete: the middle way

A steel frame with a concrete fill combines a steel structure with a concrete top. We build fully RCC and semi-concrete weighbridges; see the concrete weighbridge page.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Which lasts longer, a steel or a concrete weighbridge?
A concrete (RCC) weighbridge does not rust and needs no repainting, and Symphony gives it a 25-year structural warranty. A steel weighbridge lasts well with repainting and suits sites that may move.
Is a concrete weighbridge less accurate?
No. Accuracy depends on the load cells and calibration. Both steel and RCC weighbridges are built to Class III (OIML R76).
Can a concrete weighbridge be moved?
A concrete weighbridge is built for a permanent location. If you may relocate, choose a steel or modular weighbridge.
