Black cotton soil and a dry summer: set the base and the cabin right.
Solapur lies in the rain shadow of the Sahyadri, so most of the year is dry and the summer is long and hot. Two things follow for a weighbridge here. First, much of the district sits on black cotton soil, which swells when the rains come and shrinks again in the dry months; the foundation has to go down to the firm layer shown on our drawing after a soil check, or the approaches settle and the weighbridge starts to rock. Second, the indicator, printer and computer live in a small cabin through the hot months, so give the cabin shade, ventilation and a proper earth with surge protection for the pre-monsoon storms. In a distillery or sugar factory, spilled molasses is sticky and holds dust, so choose a concrete (RCC) weighbridge that can be washed, and keep the gap around it clean. Towel and chaddar units send out bulky but light loads, so a 12 m weighbridge suits most of their trucks; if finished goods leave in 40-ft containers, plan 18 m and 40–60 MT. At an ethanol plant, place the weighbridge and its cabin where the plant's safety officer approves, outside any marked hazardous area.
