Pitted and semi-pit weighbridges.

What a pitted (pit-type) weighbridge is, how a semi-pit differs, the civil work each needs, drainage, pros and cons, and when to choose one over pit-less.

Quick answer

A pitted (pit-type) weighbridge sits in a concrete pit so its deck is level with the ground and trucks drive on without ramps. A semi-pit weighbridge uses a shallower pit with the deck at or just above ground level. Both save space but need more civil work and good drainage than a pit-less weighbridge.

A pitted weighbridge (also called a pit-type or pit weighbridge) is installed in a concrete pit so that its deck is level with the surrounding ground. Trucks drive straight on without ramps, from either end or, where the layout allows, from the side.

Full pit or semi-pit?

RampsNoneNone or very short
Retaining wallsYesYes, lower

Both use the same deck, load cells and electronics as a pit-less weighbridge. The difference is the foundation, which we draw for your exact size and site.

Advantages

  • Smallest footprintNo ramp length at each end, so it fits tight plots and busy yards.
  • Any approachVehicles can turn onto the deck where a ramped bridge would be awkward.
  • Flat yardForklifts, carts and pedestrians can cross the deck.

What to plan for

  • More civil workExcavation, retaining walls and a deeper foundation than pit-less.
  • DrainageRain and wash water must leave the pit through a drain or sump; keep it clear.
  • Access for serviceLoad cells sit below ground; the drawing leaves room to reach them.
  • GroundwaterOn a high water table, a pit-less or semi-pit layout is usually the safer choice.

Pitted or pit-less?

Choose pit-less when you have about 8 – 10 m free at each end for ramps; choose a pit or semi-pit when you do not. The full comparison also covers RCC and modular decks.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

What is a pitted weighbridge?
A weighbridge installed in a concrete pit so its deck is level with the ground. Trucks drive on without ramps. It needs excavation, retaining walls and drainage.
What is a semi-pit weighbridge?
A layout between pit and pit-less: a shallower pit puts the deck at or just above ground level, so long ramps are not needed but excavation is less than for a full pit.
How do you keep water out of a weighbridge pit?
The pit floor slopes to a drain or sump shown on the foundation drawing. Keep the drain clear; we check it during AMC visits.
Does Symphony make pit-type weighbridges?
Yes. Symphony builds pit-type weighbridges from 10 to 100 MT with steel or RCC decks, up to 18 m in India and 24 m or longer for export, with the foundation drawing included.
